POWNAL, Vt. – The Vermont State Police are continuing their search for a missing 71-year-old woman.

Police received a call around 10 p.m. Monday from family members reporting Rita Sweet, 71, of Pownal, missing. Sweet was last seen leaving her residence on foot around 11 a.m. June 30 on Vt. Route 346 near US Route 7.

Sweet was last seen wearing blue floral print shorts, a blue tank top and blue sandals. She is described as having gray hair, blue eyes, is five foot four inches tall and weighs approximately 170-180 pounds. Sweet wears glasses and has a distinct mole under her left eye.

Officials are concerned for Sweet because of her age, minor medical issues, and they said she is unprepared for inclement weather or for staying out overnight.

Police believe Sweet is in New York with the last possible sighting in Hoosick at around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the search and any leads in the Hoosick area can be referred to their dispatch at 518-270-5252.

VSP will continue to follow leads in the Vermont area. Anyone with information regarding Sweet’s whereabouts are asked to call the Shaftsbury barracks at 802-442-5421.
