STATEN ISLAND, NY - The USS SLATER, the last Destroyer Escort afloat in America, is expected to depart Staten Island Monday morning at 5 a.m. for her return voyage to Albany. The ship will head north on the Hudson River, passing the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and USS Intrepid.
A gun salute is planned when passing West Point, with a return salute by a Cadet Squad. This should occur at approximately 1 p.m., pending actual time of departure and speed, as well as marine traffic.
Honors will be rendered at Hyde Park, home of FDR, one the originators of the concept of a Destroyer Escort. FDR’s son, Franklin, Jr., commanded the Destroyer Escort USS ULVERT M. MOORE during WWII.
USS SLATER should be passing the Walkway Over the Hudson at approximately 4 p.m. The best places to view SLATER are public parks and recreation areas along the Hudson River.
It may be possible to track USS SLATER’s progress by following the tugs on www.marinetraffic.com. Names of tugs will be released as that information becomes available. Radio operators will be aboard SLATER.
The approved frequencies for communication are CB channel 15 - 27.135 MHz, GMRS channel 15 - 462.7125 MHz, FRS channel 7 - 462.7125 MHz, Marine channel 72 - 156.625 MHz, and Ham 146.52 Mhz. In addition, a signalman will be communicating by Morse code with a signal lamp and with semaphore flags, both WWII equivalents of text messaging.
It is hoped that staff will have the ship open by July 4th. More specific information will be released as it becomes available. For updates, please visit the website at www.ussslater.org and the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/USS.Slater.
