Community shows support for stabbing victim's children, family

RENSSELAER, N.Y. – The community came together for a fundraising event in Troy, to remember a mother who was stabbed to death in June.

Family, friends, and even strangers came out on Saturday night to the Rensselaer Eagles to remember Amber Fernald, who was 33-years-old when she was killed on June 10. People also gathered to support the woman’s three children, who are now without a mother.

“The oldest son has been keeping his head up; the daughter is strong, keeping it together for her family. They've been doing a great job,” said family friend Trish Badi.

In the early morning hours of June 10, neighbors told police that Fernald's children came running out of their home on Sixth Avenue in Troy, screaming their mother was bleeding on the floor.

Officials say the mother was stabbed to death in her third floor apartment. Troy Police have arrested 28-year-old Alexis Torres in the case, saying he is responsible for Fernald's death. He has been charged with second degree murder.

Family and friends have stepped up to take care of Fernald’s three children.

“I haven't been able to grieve because I got my grandchildren to worry about,” said Amber’s mother, Patricia Fernald.

Patricia Fernald says she's taking it one day at a time, and with a fundraising event like the one at the Rensselaer Eagles, she says it will help her family tremendously.

“I'm gonna make sure the money is out away for them because that's what my daughter would have wanted,” said Patricia Fernald.

“I think she would be grateful that her family and friendship and together for her kids to make sure that there will be some money put away for college education, to make sure their medical care and home care would be taken care of for the next five-plus years,” said Badi.
