Vet, 100, to graduate alongside great-grandson

Posted: Updated:

SCHUYLERVILLE, N.Y. -- A local man will graduate alongside his great-grandson Saturday, all thanks to a state program.

Schuylerville High School Principal Matthew Sickles is excited to be a part of Operation Recognition, a statewide program that allows World War II, Vietnam, and Korean War veterans who never finished high school to receive a diploma from a participating school district.

He stormed the beaches of Normandy, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and come Saturday, George Hulka, who turned 100 in April, will be graduating alongside his great-grandson--Devin Stark, a senior at Schuylerville High School.

“I think the most we've ever had is two in one year and this year we were blown away - we had six families reach out to us for the recognition, which is just awesome. We have a hundred year old World War II veteran and the fact that he can be here to receive his diploma from his great-grandson is just spectacular for us to be a part of that,” he said. “It's just an honor for us, y'know, we have tremendous respect for the military and for the sacrifice that our soldiers make for our country.”
