TROY, N.Y.—The Rensselaer Count Legislative Office of the Minority filed legislation is calling for support of Senator Charles Schumer’s proposed amendment to the Federal Transportation Bill.
The minority legislators are calling on Schumer in recognition of the impact that the closure of the Spring Avenue Bridge has had on the safety of county motorists.
The amendment would increase funding for off-system bridge repairs by $50 million.
“Rensselaer and other upstate counties are in desperate need of more funding to repair our aging roads and bridges, since our most important roads often fall outside of the national and state highway systems”, said Deputy Minority Leader Ed Manny.
The Spring Avenue Bridge in Troy, one of the main thoroughfares that leads to the city’s prosperous downtown, has been closed indefinitely since November 2013 due to concerns over stability and safety.
"It only makes sense to increase the budget for these types of repairs", said Minority Leader Peter Grimm.
