Local student makes school history after student council election

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – A local student made school history after he was elected student council president.

Luis Perez is a seventh grader at Lynch Middle School who was recently elected student council president. His new title is also a piece of school history. Perez is the first blind student to be elected to the position.

Perez is like most 14-year-olds who enjoy Harry Potter and being involved in school activities. His favorite is student council.

“I don’t know. I just like being a part of the team,” he said. “Feeling important. It’s a good feeling.”

Perez began campaigning for the position of student council president in May. He had to hang posters and find 50 friends to endorse him. But Perez didn’t let that slow him down.

“I’m pretty popular around school, so it wasn’t really that hard,” he said.

It is with that cool confidence that got him noticed around school even by the principal.

“He’s someone who is out there,” Principal Joe Witazek said. “He’s not someone who is a shadow that you don’t see.”

Michele Cetner is Perez’s one-on-one aide. She said his peers really look up to him as a leader and can’t wait to see what great things he’ll accomplish when he takes the reigns in September.

“I think he’s going to open more doors,” she said.

Perez said he was excited for the opportunity and hopes it shows anyone that sometimes you just need a little confidence to make dreams come true.

“You can do whatever you want to do if you put your mind to it,” he said.

Perez’s first official duty as student council president will come this week when he escorts the current president to eighth grade graduation.
