Freshmen get used to college ball at Siena

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Siena College basketball team has added a trio of freshmen to the mix for the upcoming season as well as the core of last year’s roster that brought the first CBI Championship to the school.

The trio got their first taste of college basketball this week. The transition from high school to college ball isn’t an easy one.

“Definitely more intense, faster game, stronger,” freshman Jimmy Paige described.

The new players get to adjust to the college game during the summer because once the fall season arrives, they hit the ground running.

“They’re learning how to practice. They’re meeting their teammates. They’re learning from Jason Rich how to deal with the media,” head coach Jimmy Patsos said.

But they’re also learning a lesson in how to deal with the always animated coach.

“He’s a real good coach,” Paige said. “He’s real animated. I like his practice styles.”

“I really like Patsos,” freshman Cam Gottfried said. “He’s had success at previous schools, so that was a major thing that lead me here.”

Gottfried joins the team from North Carolina where he went to high school. The six foot three inch shooting guard is the son of NC State men’s basketball coach Mark Gottfried.

The junior Gottfried asked his dad for pointers on how to impress his new coach.

“If I’m consistent, Jimmy will notice,” he said.

Paige comes to the team from Virginia. He was drawn to the green and gold because of their fan support.

“I really like the atmosphere,” he said. “They pull a lot of fans. They’ve got a lot of fans, and the school’s really nice.”

Paige and Gottfried join a team that returns its entire starting lineup, so getting playing time will be a battle. But the crash course during summer ball should put them in a good position to make an impact.
