Retired officers bring safety, savings to Lake George

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. -- A new money saving effort is ready to set sail at Lake George.

Seven retired police officers have been hired to work part time, patrolling the crowded lake during the summer season.

Warren County Sheriff Bud York says it's an experiment of sorts to see if he can increase police presence on the water, and save his department money at the same time.

In the past, he had to pull full time deputies from everyday road patrols to oversee activity on the water -- a burden in overtime cost.

He expects the savings with the newly hired part-time officers to be significant. They will be paid $17 an hour and work a few shifts a week, their pay coming out of a part time line item in the department’s budget.
