BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. – The man accused of kidnapping and tying up his ex-girlfriend for an extended period of time has been convicted on nine counts.
Ryan Place, 28, was indicted in November on multiple charges including kidnapping, assault and grand larceny. According to District Attorney Jim Murphy, on July 21, 2013, Place allegedly convinced a woman he had a prior relationship with to meet him at a wooded area along Brown Road in Saratoga where he then tied her up and held her captive for hours.
The woman was able to get away after she convinced Place she would be in a relationship with him again.
He faces up to 25 years at his sentencing on August 11.
Place was on parole at the time, and police were able to locate him a short time later due to an ankle bracelet he was wearing from a prior conviction of Attempted Burglary and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in which he was sentenced to 7.5 years to 11 years in prison.
Prior to sentencing, Murphy said he fled to Texas in order to avoid prosecution.
Place is also a registered level two sex offender in New York stemming from a second-degree rape conviction involving a violent crime against a 14-year-old female in 2004.
Despite the charges against him and his criminal history, Place maintained he was innocent.
"I challenge the media to get my spin on things. I have first-hand statements that have been spun on the news," he told NEWS10 ABC.
Place's father, James Place, was in court Friday and walked out in disbelief, saying his son's former girlfriend is twisting the whole story.
"Her stories don't add up, and she's changed them so many times," he said.
Place was charged with Kidnapping 2nd, Attempted Kidnapping 2nd, Assault 2nd, Assault 3rd, Grand Larceny 4th, two charges of Petit Larceny, Attempted Assault, Harassment 2nd, and two charges of Aggravated Harassment.
