MALTA, N.Y. - Authorities in Saratoga County have confirmed that the body found in Ballston Spa belonged to a woman who went missing while rafting.
Around 10:15 a.m. on Monday, authorities confirmed that a body was found in the Kayaderosseras Creek.
The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office says the body has been identified as 52-year-old Diana Henderson of Milton. The cause of death was ruled asphyxiation by drowning.
Henderson was located on a point of land between Malta Avenue and Northline Road which was exposed as the waters of the creek receded four feet after flooding over the weekend.
Crews have been searching for Henderson since Friday. Officials say she was rafting with her husband and three children on the creek when strong currents caused the group to miss their exit points.
“They were rafting from the middle line road area just a short distance from where they planned to get out. They made a pass a couple times previously to my knowledge and on their last pass they weren’t able to make it to their exit point at which point the raft capsized,” said Chief Richard Castle of the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.
The husband and children were able to make it out of the raft. However, Henderson was swept downstream. Police say she was not wearing a life vest at the time.
Search and rescue crews began combing the creek on Friday night. The search continued on Saturday, but had to be called off for a period of time due to high water.
Police say the flash flooding on Friday was not just water, but there was also a lot of debris upstream that eventually floated downstream.
“Rapid moving water can move vehicles. They can move rocks,” said Ed Trembley, Deputy Director of Saratoga County Emergency Services. “You end up going overboard and could get knocked out by a log it increases your risks or even getting fatigued trying to fight the water.”
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted throughout the search effort by the New York State Forest Rangers, Environmental Conservation Police, New York State Park Police, Ballston Spa Police Department, Ballston Spa Fire Department, Malta Ridge Fire Department, Arvin Hart Fire Department and Malta-Stillwater Ambulance.
