Schalmont Sabres clinch state championship

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -  Winning state championships isn't easy, especially when thousands of athletes begin each season with the goal of hoisting a championship plaque at the end of their season.

While few teams achieve the feat to win the championship, Section Two was lucky enough to see three of them do so on Saturday.

The Schalmont Sabres were looking for their first Class B State Championship. At top of the sixth, Greg Musk was in a jam but got out of it with a Big K. Sabres were up 2-1. Then at the bottom of the sixth, Musk helped his own cause when he hit a single to right field and scored Kevin Paskevich. giving Schalmont a 3-1 lead.

During the top of the seventh, with two outs and a weak ground ball hit to the hot corner, Paskevich fielded and that was the clincher.

"This was incredible, we had a goal at the beginning of the season to get here and everybody contributed today, we had to play two games back to back with very little time in between and i'm very proud of the effort these guys gave from start to finish and it's just unbelievable feeling," said Head Coach Bob Anderson.
