EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. - A New York City man was arrested after a year-long investigation into identity theft and stolen credit cards.

Andy Ceballos, of Bronx, was stopped in July 2013 for driving a vehicle unregistered due to being suspended by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Police discovered dozens of credit cards hidden in a bag chip snacks. Police suspected the cards were being used in a credit card scam, but police could not identify them as being stolen.

Ceballos and two other associates were released pending further investigation.

Police said the credit cards had been altered both in the name of the account holder as well as the barcode electronic data strip.

Police said other evidence collected in Ceballos’ case indicated that he and his associated used the forged cards to purchase high-end electronics such as iPhones and iPads. The alleged schemers would then take the merchandise and the printed receipt back into the store for a refund.

Police said the suspects would first buy a gift card with the credit card and then purchase the merchandise with the gift card so that the suspects would be refunded in cash.

The 24-year-old was charged with 37 counts of Identity Theft and 37 counts of Possessing Forged Instrument.

Ceballos was arraigned in East Greenbush Town Court and is scheduled to reappear on June 19.
