Hoosic Valley seeks first championship title

SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. – The Hoosic Valley baseball team will seek its first Class C Championship.

Although this will be the team’s first trip to the Final Four, the Indians feel far from inexperienced. The team is drawing on a successful run in basketball this past winter as they go for a possible state title in baseball this weekend.

Junior John Rooney capped off Hoosic Valley’s first ever state title in basketball by a dunk three months ago. He hopes for the same results this weekend as he competes in baseball.

“If we can win state for basketball and baseball, that’d be history in the making,” he said. “I’m not sure how many teams in Section II have won states back-to-back for basketball and baseball.”

That breakthrough title on the court has changed the way Rooney and several others from the basketball team approached the current baseball season, according to head coach George Brooks.

“The biggest thing is you get some big game experience,” he said. “When you get to this point, you can’t really practice a big game like that, so they got some big game experience, and I think the other guys on the team see that on their faces.”

“Losing just doesn’t feel like an option this year,” senior pitcher JT Sawyer said. “In basketball, too. We weren’t just going to lose, and we just couldn’t be stopped, and I hope we do the same this weekend.”

Hoosic Valley will take on defending state champions Seton Catholic at 1 p.m. Saturday. If they win, they advance to the championship game later that day at 4 p.m.
