Averill Park students build cardboard bridge

AVERILL PARK, N.Y. -- An annual tradition continues at Averill Park High School Thursday as aspiring engineers, and students just looking for a fun challenge, build a bridge.

Students in the Principles Of Engineering class built a 48-foot bridge, using just cardboard and glue, and put the materials and their design to the test Thursday.

"We test them to failure and they do a structural analysis to look at what the internal member forces were in every member and then extrapolate all that and apply it to the big bridge after we test those pieces and say could we build this,” said Technology teacher Matthew Duff.

Even though they think the glue failed them, they'll actually study a video to analyze what did and didn't work -- keeping in mind that in a project like this -- as much can be learned from failure as by success.
