TROY, N.Y. - The father of a Troy woman, who was killed in a fire, spoke at a press conference Wednesday.
Police ruled that the fire that killed 19-year-old Vanessa Milligan was set intentionally. Milligan was only days away from giving birth when she was killed in the April 3 fire.
Police have ruled the case a double homicide, but no arrests have been made and they have not named any persons of interest. Troy Police Department Chief John Tedesco said the investigation is still very active and that every department resource is being expended on the investigation.
But Milligan’s family said they struggle every day, and police have given them very little information.
“We, as her family, we know nothing. Nothing,” Milligan’s aunt Shannon Williamson said. “Do you think that’s fair to us?”
Tedesco said several leads are being pursued and are asking for the family to be patient.
"We have to follow procedural guidelines,” he said. “We have to meet the mandates of the evidence laws, so it's better to be frustrated in the beginning rather than have us take someone to trial and lose it.”
Milligan’s family, including her father Nathan, spoke at the Missing Link Church in Troy Wednesday evening about their frustrations with the investigation. They said they have their suspicions as to who is responsible.
“I believe it was done because my daughter was pregnant by a certain individual and because of that circumstance it changed his life and because he felt like this was the only alternative,” Nathan said.
Now the family is looking to the community to help find justice. They want people to come forward with information. Nathan Milligan offered a reward.
“My daughter has tons of friends out there,” he said. “There’s got to be somebody out there who knows something. I’m not rich, but I promise you whoever helps capture the killers, I’m going to put up $5,000.”
Milligan’s family set up a fund on gofundme.com. They said all proceeds will go toward the reward in addition to the $5,000 Nathan offered.
Tedesco said he is hopeful an arrest will be made soon.
