Vets, mental health organizations, push for 'Justice for our Veterans' Act

ALBANY, N.Y. - Lawmakers are fighting to make sure veterans with mental health ailments don't get lost in the criminal justice system.

Veterans and mental health organizations will be in Albany on Tuesday to urge legislators to pass the "Justice for our Veterans" Act.

The bill would make sure veterans get treatment and consideration if they suffer from a service-related mental illness that had some role in their crime. After an assessment, if it's determined that the veteran did have some form of mental health issue, all the veteran has to do is complete treatment, and the court could reduce or even dismiss charges for certain crimes.
