Woman hits gas pump, causes fire

GERMANTOWN, N.Y. –  A driver was lucky to escape injury after a scary crash at a gas station.

On Sunday afternoon, authorities say a driver drove through the pump at the Route 9G Sunoco station. The car pushed the pump into the station, causing a fire and damaging the side of a building.
Several firefighters responded within minutes, along with an ambulance.

Authorities say a female driver told them her gas pedal became stuck, causing the accident.

"A car hit the gas pump, sent the gas pump into the corner edge of the building, which ignited the outside part of the building,” said Assistant Fire Chief Doug Pearson.

Fire officials say the gas that remained in the pump also caught on fire. Fortunately, no one was injured.

"Yes, lucky. And with a good crew we were able to extinguish the fire immediately,” said Pearson.

The driver's car barely had any damage. The building inspector says the gas pumps were recently upgraded but certain safety features weren't in place.

“There's some question about why a fire suppression system which used to be here in the original station weren't reinstalled,” said building inspector John Fieser

The owners of the gas station declined to go on camera, but said they’ll be back at the station on Monday morning to assess the damage and determine when they can reopen.
