Local veteran recalls preparing for Normandy invasion

ALBANY, N.Y. – The 70th anniversary of D-Day has been an opportunity to teach younger generations the history of World War II, and for reflection of those who were there.

One local veteran took part in the Normandy invasion, all those years ago.

NEWS10 ABC had the opportunity to sit down at the WWII memorial with Robert Tarpinian of Greene County during the recent Leatherstocking Honor Flight to D.C.

He shared with Anchor Mark Baker how he helped prepare Omaha Beach for the invasion, landing there before the rest of the troops stormed the Normandy coast to establish the critical beachhead..

"We were supposed to wait for men to come off the ships. But then we were notified to go in the with signalmen to set up the beach with different flags to the fellows coming in with the boats and the soldier would know which part of the beach to go to,” he said.
