Local man aims to bring D-Day vets together

ALBANY, N.Y. -- June 6, 2014 marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when courageous men landed on the beaches of Normandy.

“Tomorrow being June sixth twenty-fourteen, seventy years ago this country participated in the largest amphibious invasion. There were men there—boys, y’know, from seventeen to twenty-five—asked to save the world. Most people can’t relate to that today. And maybe sometimes they don’t want to or it’s just all been forgotten—there’s gotta be somebody around to remind them,” said Frank DeSorbo the president of the D-Day Revisited Association.

DeSorbo holds an event annually that brings together area veterans who participated in the Normandy Invasion.

“There’s about 25 to 30 veterans that are still alive that I have contact with. Even this year I found two new ones. They’re out there. The veterans are out there,” he said.

He said he checks in at diners and assisted living homes for veterans he wouldn’t be able to find using a different approach. He hopes to eventually put together a collected oral history.
