FORT EDWARD, N.Y. – An Upstate Correctional Facility prisoner was sentenced to a maximum sentence for assaulting a correction officer.
Juan Diaz was sentenced to 25 years to life for assaulting a correction officer at Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Malone, N.Y. in June 2013.
Diaz was previously sentenced as a persistent violent felon after he was convicted in April 2013 of Assault, Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Promoting Prison Contraband. On June 19, 2013, Diaz stabbed a correctional officer with a metal weapon resembling an ice pick in June 2013.
Diaz testified at trial that “uniform” officers were responsible for destroying his life. He also claimed he was he was attempting to commit suicide by correction officer and was hoping to die in the act of stabbing the officer.
The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital a few hours after the incident.
