Schenectady man arrested for placing suspicious package


NISKAYUNA, N.Y. – Police arrested and charged a Schenectady man for placing a suspicious package outside a local shopping center.

The Niskayuna Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious package around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Mohawk Commons on Balltown Road. Witnesses reported seeing a male subject place a suspicious looking package in the area between the entrances of Target and Famous Footware.

Police said witnesses described seeing the male walk away and leave the package behind.

The New York State Police Bomb Squad responded to the area and an evacuation of several stores commenced. No one was injured during the incident.

Witnesses located and identified the described male during the evacuation. The package was found to be non-life threatening and was recovered by police.

The male was identified as 21-year-old Joshua Usher. Usher was arrested and charged with Placing a False Bomb or Hazardous Substance in the First Degree.

Usher was arraigned in the Niskayuna Town Court and sent to jail pending the posting of bail. He is due back in court June 4.

Shoppers returned to stores after approximately a half hour.
