Heavy storms, lightning hit Capital Region

ALBANY, N.Y. – Heavy rain and lightning swept through the Capital Region Tuesday causing flash flooding and even set some buildings on fire.

Paul Miller is a firefighter with the Town of Guilderland Operations.

“We had a lightning strike on a pole which traveled through the wires and into the barn,” he said.

The electrical charge broke apart the wood on the pole and scattered the wood across the ground. Some pieces landed 20 yards away.

Neighbor Tom George saw it happen.

“I saw the lightning whack,” he described. “I saw a big puff of smoke.”

George said he took shelter in his barn in Guilderland Center as the storms moved through.

“It made the hairs on the back of my arms and neck [rise],” he said. “It was really loud.”

He rushed over to his neighbors to see if anything had been damaged.

“I quick ran up. I grabbed a fire extinguisher,” he said. “It knocked it down pretty quick in the corner, and then it just ignited again.”

Emergency crews arrived and put out the flames. Officials said the fire spread through the roof.

“Just a lot of charred lumber inside,” he said. “There is some equipment in there. Equipment may be salvageable.”

No animals or people were hurt.

“These volunteers are amazing, absolutely amazing,” George said.
