Fonda residents reminded to be mindful of door to door solicitors

FONDA, N.Y. – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department is reminding residents to be careful when it comes to sharing information with door to door solicitors.

The warning comes after complaints from the Village of Fonda, where some residents, including the mayor, say two young salesmen used deceptive tactic to get them to show them their utility bills.

The Under-sheriff says the men were telling residents that they were from their utility company.

One of those residents was Village Mayor Bill Peeler.

“I said, ‘I am the Mayor,’ he said, ‘oh, I didn’t know that,’ I said ‘what company are you representing?’ he said ‘I already told you,’ I said, ‘no you did not tell me that, your approach is inappropriate,’” said Mayor Peeler.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, the men claimed to be from a company called Spark Energy. However, it is unclear to Mayor Peeler or police if the men were really who they said they were.

Authorities are unsure of who the men work for because the solicitors did not apply for a peddlers permit with the village offices. That paperwork requires solicitors to share their names and the names and addresses of their businesses.
