Schenectady police investigate overnight burglaries

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Schenectady Police Department is investigating three overnight burglaries that occurred Tuesday.

The burglaries occurred in the Mont Pleasant and Central State Street areas.

All three incidents involved single family homes that were occupied during the time of the crime.

Residents said the recent increase in burglaries is making them uneasy. Patricia Smith is a member of the Mont Pleasant Neighborhood Association.

“That’s something that’s a little scary,” she said.

Police said an unsecured window towards the rear of the house was reported in all three incidents.

The items stolen during the burglaries included a wallet, purse, money, jewelry, and video game systems and accessories.

Neighbors said these incidents are becoming too frequent. Sharon Chew said her home was burglarized two years ago.

“They took my son’s bike off the porch. They vandalized my car,” she said. “I mean, they went as low as to take a little plastic cup that had some dimes and nickels in it. They took that with them, too.”

Police also said homes in Rotterdam were burglarized last week; however, they do not know, yet, if the crimes are related.

Schenectady police are advising residents to secure their windows and doors and set security systems if their homes are equipped.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Schenectady Police Department Detective Division at 518-382-5245.
