State Police: Government contractor driving Uhaul with gold and silver crashes

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – State Police say a Uhaul carrying precious metals crashed on the Thruway in Western New York.

According to authorities, police received a report of a Uhaul box truck rolled on its side, up against a guide rail on I-90 eastbound on Monday morning.

Upon arrival, Troopers determined the driver was a government contracted transporter. The driver told police that he was carrying about $2 million worth of gold and silver inside the truck.

The scene was secured by State Police as the driver’s credentials were verified. An armored vehicle responded and offloaded the precious metals.

State Police say the items in the truck consisted of large mechanical filter like cores used in military aircraft which contain amounts of gold and silver.

The left lane remained temporarily closed near the Erie County mile marker as authorities recovered the vehicle and its contents.

No other vehicles were involved and the cause of the accident is under investigation.

The driver was not injured.
