Schenectady crossing guard accused of not doing his job

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A Schenectady crossing guard has been accused of not helping kids cross the street.

Resident Brenda Glodny said she frequently picks up her grandchildren from the corner of Duane and McClyman Street in Schenectady. She said the crossing guard assigned to that intersection is not attentive.

“I see mostly just sitting in his vehicle,” she said. “He doesn’t get out. One time he got out with his sign, and then he gets right back in his vehicle. He never crosses anybody. And I’ve talked to the parents that are on the corner, and they’re saying the same thing.”

The crossing guard identified himself as Fred Johnson. He said he's been at the intersection for three months and has been a crossing guard for four years.

Schenectady police oversee crossing guards in the city. They said they’re conducting an internal investigation.
