LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- The lockout at Southgate and Loudonville Elementary Schools has been lifted, according to the town of Colonie Police Department.
A lock out occurs when no one is allowed in or out of the building.
A Colonie Police Department Traffic Safety Unit initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Troy-Schenectady Road and Delatour Road after observing a Dodge Pick-up truck traveling at 76 ph in a 45 mph zone. As an investigator was approaching the stopped truck, the operator sped away at a high rate of speed on Delatour Road.
The driver was described as a white male, in his 40’s with brown hair. Due to the speed of the truck and congested traffic conditions there was no pursuit and the truck was last observed turning west onto Watervliet Shaker Road.
A short time later, the truck was observed traveling at a high rate of speed and in the on-coming lane on Fiddlers Lane by a Colonie Police Patrol Officer. The truck was headed towards Route 9, but after turning around, the patrol officer could not locate the truck. Two witnesses called the Colonie Police to state that they observed the suspect truck traveling North on Route 9, but officers were unable to locate the truck.
At 8:42 am, the Colonie Police Department received a call from a civilian that observed the truck at 71 Old Niskayuna Road and that the driver told the witness that he was out of gas. Responding officers located the truck, but the driver was not with the truck. A search of the area was conducted by the officers and they were assisted by a Colonie Police K-9 and the New York State Police Aviation Unit.
The search and investigation revealed that the driver had fled the area prior to officers arriving. The investigation is on-going and once the driver has been positively identified, he will face several vehicle and traffic charges when located.
Due to the fact that the last known location of the suspect was in close proximity to three schools, those schools were notified and placed in Lock-Out while the search took place. The three schools were: St. Gregory’s School, Southgate Elementary and Loudonville Elementary. The Lock-Out notification was made at 8:54 a.m. and lifted at 9:54 a.m.
Details on the identity of the driver and charges will be released following his arrest.
The Town of Colonie Police Department says there is no longer a threat in the area. Officers will continue to patrol the area as a cautionary measure, but activity in the schools has returned to normal.
