BENNINGTON, Vt. – A Bennington sheriff’s deputy has been arrested and fired after an investigation revealed evidence of misconduct.

Gary Harrington was arrested and charged with possession and sale of regulated drugs, forgery and counterfeiting of documents, neglect of duty by public officer, and extortion on Wednesday.

In a statement released by the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Chad Schmidt says the investigation was conducted by the Bennington Police Department upon his request.

Harrington employment with the sheriff’s office has been terminated, and he being held at Bennington PD on $10,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Bennington Superior court on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

According to the sheriff, Harrington was assigned to a variety of tasks during his time at the department. He worked security details at Mount Anthony Union High School, but officials say the investigation uncovered no criminal activity on his part while on duty at the school.

The sheriff also says that there is no evidence that the drugs possessed or sold by Harrington were from prescription drug take back programs.
