SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Schenectady County Office of the Sheriff is investigating an inmate death which occurred on Wednesday.
Officials say that at 1:58 a.m., while a correction officer was conducting his normal rounds, he discovered an inmate sitting on the floor of his cell with a sheet attached to the top of the cell bar running to and around the inmate’s neck.
A code was called, and supervisors, officers, and medical staff responded. CPR was administered immediately and continued until first responders arrived.
Schenectady Fire Department and Mohawk Ambulance responded and transported the inmate to Ellis Hospital’s emergency room. The inmate, Lucky Lee Wilkins Jr., was pronounced dead at 2:49 a.m.
Officials say a preliminary investigation reveals all policies and procedures were adhered to by all members of the sheriff’s staff. A full investigation is being conducted and details will be released as they become available.
The State Commission of Corrections was notified and will also be conducting its own investigation.
Wilkins Jr. was booked in March 2014 for criminal sale of controlled substance in the third-degree, and bail was set at $25,000.
