Mobile office hits the road to help vets get benefits

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Veterans deal with many struggles, and one mobile group works to make sure finances aren't one of them.

The Disabled American Veterans mobile office hits the road to help hundreds of veterans get the VA benefits they earned -- all for free.

Fredrick Smith is one of many veterans who returned home from the Vietnam War to an unwelcoming society.

“It was tough. As you all know, we weren’t very well liked,” he said.

Two weeks before he was out of the army, he said his sergeant gave him a final order: register with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

“I really didn’t get into the system as per say besides that until ‘94 when I came apart with the PTSD. It’s been a rough road,” he said.

It’s a rough road that smooth’s out when the DAV mobile office stopped in Pittsfield Tuesday to help veterans get their VA benefits.

The DAV advocates for veterans and represents them to the VA. They say, without representation, it’s easy for paperwork to get lost in the shuffle.

For Smith, he says he’s on the road to recovery and he’s grateful he found this service along the way.

“I swear by them. They’re one of the best advocates for guys like me,” he said.

The van heads to Chicopee, Massachusetts Tuesday night. They will set up at the American Legion Post 275 Wednesday.
