Officials wait for Albany bear to come down from tree

ALBANY, N.Y. - Albany Police have confirmed that a bear was spotted in Albany on Tuesday and remains in a tree.

The Albany Police Department is assisting the NYS Environmental Conservation Police in the area of Rose Court and Whitehall Road.

Earlier in the day, a bear was spotted off of Mt Hope drive near Route 787. The bear is believed to be the same one sighted several times throughout the day.

The DEC was not successful in anesthetizing the bear because of its location, so the bear was shot which caused it to run up the tree.

The bear remains alive, 70 feet up in a tree at this time. ECOs will wait for the bear to come down and dispatch him on the ground.

Officials say the bear previously been relocated twice for nuisance behavior, as indicated by the double tags on his ear. ECOs will remain on site and monitor the situation overnight if necessary.

Harriet Myers middle school went into lock out because of the bear in a nearby tree. The school dismissed at normal times and walkers were provided with bus transportation past the bear scene.
