Tractor trailer swerves to avoid truck, strikes tree

Posted:

SUNDERLAND, Vt. – A tractor trailer swerved to avoid an oncoming truck in Sunderland, and struck a tree after the edge of a dirt road gave way.

On May 22, 2014 an officer responded to a tractor trailer crash on Dunham Road, just south of the Arlington town line, in Sunderland.

When they arrived, it was determined that the tractor trailer, a 2009 Kenworth with a car carrier attached had been traveling west on Dunham Road. The driver, identified as Charles Sietz, observed a pickup truck traveling towards him through a curve in the road. Sietz advised that he had pulled as far as he could to the right to avoid a collision with the pickup truck when the dirt road gave out under his wheels at the road edge.

When the road gave out, the tractor trailer slid sideways, struck a tree, and came to rest leaning over a steep embankment. The driver of the pickup truck failed to stop and offer assistance.

Sietz, who is employed by Lewis Transport LLC of Sibley, Mo., was uninjured in the crash. He was not issued any tickets as a result of this crash.

Roberts Towing of Wilton, N.Y. was dispatched to the scene and used two large wreckers to return the tractor trailer back to the roadway. Dunham Road was closed for approximately three hours.

Anyone with further information regarding this crash is asked to contact Sgt. Brian Turner at (802) 442-5421.
