MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.Y. – A father and his two sons were arrested at the Montgomery County Jail for allegedly committing crimes together in Ostego County.
According to the Ostego County Sheriff’s Office, the three men were working together to commit a number of property crimes in the Town of Cherry Valley – located in Ostego County.
Authorities say John Mickels, 56, Joshua Mickels, 33, and Jonathan Mickels, 29, stole money and prescription medications from a Salt Springville resident in September 2013. The men are also accused of stealing a log splitter valued at more than $2,000.
With the aid of surveillance photographs from one of the victim’s home, it was determined that Joshua Mickels was a suspect in the case.
Investigators from the Otsego and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police in Fonda investigators located and interviewed the three men in November 2013. They say the stolen log splitter was recovered in Schoharie County that evening.
An investigation revealed that the men stole the medications and money out of the house and they conspired to and attempted to commit burglaries of a cabin, pole barn and shed as well as stealing the log splitter from the other property, say authorities.
The Mickels were arrested that same day for the Montgomery County burglaries that they allegedly committed. They were charged with burglary in the second degree, grand larceny in the fourth degree, attempted burglary in the second and third degree.
They have been in the Montgomery County Jail on $100,000 bail since that time.
On May 21, the Mickels men were arraigned in Town of Cherry Valley Court and bail was set at $10,000.
They were returned to the Montgomery County Jail after their court appearance.
If convicted of the above crimes they face up to 22 years in State Prison.
