NASSAU, N.Y. – As Memorial Day approaches, one town is nearly completed with the restoration of an abandoned burial ground for veterans.
The Brainard Rural Cemetery, which is located on Route 20 within the Town of Nassau, contains about 300 burials of early community residents and veterans.
The veterans buried in the cemetery served during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
Residents in the area contributed funds to erect a historic marker and restore some of the gravestones, with the help of the New York State Cemetery Board. The state funds paid for the removal of many dangerous trees, a survey of the cemetery and high quality fencing. State funds also ensured the restoration of about 60 damaged and dangerous monuments.
