Mother accused of driving under the influence with 1-year-old in car

SHAFTSBURY, Vt., - A mother is accused of driving under the influence of drugs following an investigation into a car crash.

Vermont State Police say they responded to a single vehicle crash on route 7A on Tuesday evening.

Upon arrival to the scene, Troopers say they found one vehicle engulfed in flames, off the side of the road. The driver, 25-year-old Vanessa Hoyt, and her 1-year-old child safely evacuated the car with the help of a passer-by.

An investigation into the crash determined that Hoyt was driving northbound when she leaned back to get her child a bottle and then drove off the edge of the road, say authorities. The vehicle traveled more than 200 feet before hitting a boulder and then a tree head-on. When the vehicle struck the tree, the engine burst into flames.

The baby was unharmed during the crash as she was safely restrained in a car seat. However, Hoyt was not wearing a seat belt when the airbag deployed and she suffered an arm injury, according to State Police. The woman was taken to the hospital where it was allegedly discovered that she was under the influence of narcotics.

Vermont State Police say they arrested Hoyt for driving while under the influence of drugs and endangering the welfare of a child. She will be in court on Tuesday to answer to her charges.
