DA: Domestic violence incident to play factor in murder case

VICTORY MILLS, N.Y. – An 18-year-old accused of murder appeared in Saratoga Court Tuesday.

Matthew Brown is accused of killing Derik Clark, 32, by a single stab wounds to the neck late Friday night. Inside the courtroom, the judge decided there is enough evidence to take murder charges against Brown to a grand jury.

Prior to the incident, Brown contacted the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office to report a domestic disturbance between his mother and Clark. However, when deputies arrived to the scene, Clark was found dead.

According to Saratoga County District Attorney Jim Murphy, the case of domestic violence will play a large factor in the murder case. He states that it is not uncommon for charges to lessen in similar cases.

Murphy also said that the height and weight difference between Clark and Brown will come into play. Clark was 6’6’’ and weighed 275 pounds. Brown stands at 4’10’’ and weighs about 112 pounds.

Brown’s attorney stated the incident reminded him of the story of David and Goliath. He says his client was protecting himself and his mother from a domestic violation situation.

Brown has been charged with murder in the second degree. He was arraigned in Stillwater Town Court and remanded to county jail on no bail.
