Couple accused of stealing gravesite flowers in court

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. – The Ballston Spa couple who was accused of stealing flowers from grave sites appeared in court Monday.

Travis Lapell and Taiya Armer appeared in Ballston Spa Village Court after they were arrested for allegedly stealing flowers from grave sites in the village cemetery on Mother’s Day.

Ballston Spa Police said a man watched the couple take flowers he left on his fiancé’s mother’s grave earlier in the day. He said the couple loaded the flowers into their truck and drove off.

The witness then followed the couple home and waited for police to arrive.

Police said multiple other grave sites could have been affected. Many residents hope security cameras and signs are installed to deter other people from similar acts.

Lapell and Armer are charged with Petit Larceny, though other charges may be filed.

They released a statement saying, “We’ve been ridiculed. It’s embarrassing. It was a mishap that never should have happened. We had no intention to hurt anyone. We were visiting someone we lost and are sorry for what happened.”

They said they regret taking the flowers.
