GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. – Several buildings and homes were damaged after a major fire in Gloversville Thursday.

Flames ripped through two structures on North Arlington Avenue for several hours Thursday destroying everything inside. Tami Brown was at work when she received a phone call about the fire.

“I heard that some of the houses were melting,” she said. “They had the vinyl siding, and I’m like, ‘Melting?’ So I was worried what shape my house would be in when I got there.”

Brown lives across from the street from where the fire occurred. Two structures were fully engulfed in flames.

One of the homeowners said he lost everything in his garage, including lawn equipment, grills and propane tanks. One structure had a manual elevator.

The Gloversville Fire Chief said the fire was so large, the building had to be demolished.

“Heavy fire damage, and of course, being the size of the structure, it was difficult to get the hot spots and to finish extinguishment, so we did have an excavator come in and move some of the debris around, so that we could get to it,” Chief Beth Whitman-Putnam said.

Nine homes nearby were also damaged. Neighbors said the heat was so thick, they could feel it inside their homes across the street.

Brown said she’s thankful noboby was seriously injured, but she’ll never forget the image.

“Unbelievable. Unbelievable,” she said. “Very sad, but like I said, it could have been worse. But it’s scary. All I kept thinking was my dog’s there. I have to get home to my dog.”

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries from the fire but are currently doing okay. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
