ALBANY, N.Y. – Week two of the fraud trial against former senate majority leader Joe Bruno began Monday morning.

The prosecution’s case is coming towards an end as the Chief Operating Officer for one of the companies that paid Bruno as a consultant, took the stand.

The prosecution says that the former senate majority leader took hundreds of thousands of dollars between 2004 and 2006 in exchange for his official acts. They say there were three companies that paid Bruno, all partially owned by businessman Jared Abbruzzese.

Mary Louise Malick, a top budget advisor to Bruno, was on the stand as well on Monday. She testified that she visited the Troy nanotech company that Abbruzzese was connected to.

Malick told the jury that she recommended the money, in the form of a state grant, should go to Abbruzzese’s company.

A number of key witnesses took the stand last week, including Bruno’s former secretary, as well as Abbruzzese.

Clint Ballinger, the owner of Evident, the Troy based start-up that received a $1.5 million grant from the state, also testified.

Bruno, 85, is accused of accepting bribes in order to secure the grant, which Ballinger received, from the state.

He is officially charged with two counts of honest services mail fraud and if convicted, Bruno, could face time in state prison.
