ALBANY N.Y. – Albany’s annual Tulip Festival will officially kickoff at noon Friday, with the Dutch Street Scrubbing.
The Street Scrubbing was a tradition in the Netherlands where streets were scrubbed prior to a celebration. Since tulip Fest is all about celebrating Albany's Dutch Heritage, it is a perfect way to kick off the festivities. This event takes place on State and Lodge Street.
Following the street scrubbing is the Tulip Festival luncheon. The luncheon is a welcoming ceremony for this year's Tulip Queen Finalists, and a farewell to the 2013 Queen Kate Bender, and her court.
"We learned a lot about ourselves that we didn't think we were going to. You know you're going to gain the basic skills like teamwork, being able to go out in the community and even something like public speaking. My biggest thing that I learned this year is definitely delegation, being able to work as a group but still take that leadership role," said Bender.
If you plan on attending the events today and throughout the rest of the weekend, make yourself aware of the parking restrictions and road closures by checking our website at www.News10.com .
