GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – The Heat, the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, will be coming to Glens Falls.

The Glens Falls Civic Center was home to the Adirondack Phantoms for the last five years, but the team is moving to Pennsylvania and played its last home game April 18.

Glens Falls officials signed a deal with the Heat bringing the AHL team to the city for the 2014-2015 season.

“So what we’ve done, we sent them a proposal, and they have basically sent us a proposal so where we’re at right now is we’re waiting for a letter from them and also waiting for the approval from the AHL Board of Governors,” Glens Falls Councilman-at-Large Dan Hall said.

In a written statement, the Calgary Flames’ General Manager Brad Treliving said “Glens Falls has had a terrific history with the American Hockey League and will be an ideal location and environment for the development of our prospects.”

Local hockey fans are ready for the new season.

“We’ve had a lot of turnover in the past decade or more of different teams, so we have a really loyal fan base here,” Glens Falls resident Will Fowler said.

Resident Chip Esper said a new hockey team will help boost the local economy.

“We have a great community, wonderful people, and to have exciting events like this happen from sporting to recreation to entertainment is just a real boon for our community,” he said.

Richard Cirelly opened his coffee shop two weeks ago. It’s located down the street from the civic center. He said a new hockey team can only increase the flow of traffic in and out of his business.

“The more we can do stuff for the area and the more businesses come in the area, it’s better for everybody, and with a new hockey team…oh, it’ll be great,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Heat said Glens Falls was always at the top of the relocation list and more information into the deal will be released next week.
