Friends, family mourn man killed in Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. – A community continues to mourn a 35-year-old shot and killed Thursday in the South End neighborhood.

Just hours after Thomas Johnson was killed near his home, family and friends gathered holding each other close while grieving. A memorial for him has grown as people continue to light candles in his honor.

Police said the shooting took place around 6:10 p.m. Responding officers found Johnson when they responded to the scene. He was taken to Albany Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Reverend Avery Comithier of Elijah Missionary Church says he just saw Johnson recently and is recommitting himself to stopping the gun violence he says has grown significantly in the past few months in the South End neighborhood.

"I saw him day before yesterday right here by my parking lot and I said you ok? He says yeah I'm Ok. We want to be able to deter. I've made a decision that during the night time I'm going to be more visible. I'm going to come out. I don't care if it's twelve midnight, one o'clock,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Albany Police Detective Division at 518-462-8039.
