COLONIE, N.Y. – A recruitment open house is being held at a Colonie fire department.
Like most volunteer fire departments, the one on Fuller Road in Colonie is having a hard time getting volunteers through the doors.
“In the last several years the decline in volunteer firefighters has hurt us a little bit,” said Assistant Chief Stephen Savoca.
The economy has played a role in the reason why there is a decline in volunteers because people may be working extra hours or two jobs.
“I started at age 36, been doing it for 11 years. I’m a professional. I have a family, grandkids, you do have time,” explained Savoca.
During the weekend, the Full Road Firehouse joined dozens of others as part of RECRUITNY. Departments are opening their doors for people to learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter.
Savoca highlighted the responsibilities and rewards that come with protecting the area’s residents from danger.
Last year, more than 500 fire departments in 55 counties participated. You can find out more by clicking here.
