Niskayuna and Shenendehowa get ready for lacrosse matchup

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – Niskayuna and Shenendehowa High Schools are getting ready to face each other in lacrosse.

“Shen is always the team to beat in every sport,” Niskayuna player Mike D’Amario said.

Whether its football, basketball or baseball, the Plainsmen have a track record for winning sectional titles, but when it comes to lacrosse, there may be a different story.

“I think lacrosse here is probably our best sport,” D’Amario said.

“I’ve been on varsity three years, and we haven’t beat them any of the times we played them,” Shen player Ian Grey said.

But the Plainsmen will have a shot to break the streak Thursday night when they host the Silver Warriors.

“It’s the game every single one of us looks forward to every year,” Grey said. “It’s always a fund one. It’s always a fight.”

“They’ve been a very good lacrosse team for a long time, and so have we,” Nisky coach Mike Vorgang said. “Every time that we play, it’s certainly going to be a very exciting match up.”

A school the size of Shen usually doesn’t take on the underdog roll, but Thursday may be different.

“We are the defending Class A champs. They were in B last year,” Shen coach Jason Gifford said. “They swept us last year, so you could say they were the best team in the area.”

Underdog or not, the Plainsmen are confident they can break the streak and put a little pressure on the Silver Warriors.

“It’s a new team. It’s a new year, and I feel like we are more prepped than we have ever been to take on the challenge,” Grey said.

“There’s some pressure, but we’re always waiting for that,” Nisky player Reed Avveduti said. “We love playing games where the other team is really good. The pressure that’s there is just that we want to win.”
