COHOES, N.Y. – Detective Ross with the Cohoes Police Department said one man is accused of breaking a baby’s ribs.

According to authorities, Christopher Barnes, 26, admitted to allegedly squeezing his seven-month-old son’s chest because the baby wouldn’t stop crying.

Kayleigh Purrott lives in the same West Street apartment building as Barnes.

“He’s an infant,” she said. “You don’t put your hands on an infant. That’s not right.”

Purrott said Barnes and the mother of his children have not been the most attentive parents.

“Their four-year-old son over the winter was out here by himself all around the place and came knocking on my door,” she said. “He came in and was here for a good 45 minutes to an hour by himself. I went over and knocked. No one answered. So he sat in here and then finally his dad was looking for him and came knocking on my door.”

Child Protective Services was already investigating Barnes’ household after an unknown person reported to CPS the baby looked underweight. The baby was taken to Albany Medical Center for a scan when the nine broken ribs were discovered.

Police then became involved and interviewed Barnes when he allegedly admitted to using force on his son.

Barnes was remanded to jail on $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
