Saratoga Casino and Raceway proposes bid for casino in East Greenbush

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. - Saratoga Casino and Raceway proposed a new destination resort casino for Rensselaer County.

The owners of the long established Saratoga Casino and Raceway announced on Tuesday their pitch to build an upscale casino and entertainment venue in East Greenbush. The location would be on Thompson Hill Road near Exit 9 of I-90.

The owners of the Racino said in a statement that they intend to pursue a bid that would allow them to build the destination resort casino.

Sketches show the plans for the $300 million resort casino, which would sit off of Henderson Hill Road. Plans are calling for a 100,000 square foot casino featuring world class gaming, dining, and entertainment. There are also plans for a 300 room hotel and 20,000 square feet for high end retail.

The project is being called a game changer by Saratoga Casino and Raceway.

The Town of East Greenbush unanimously approved the project last week, even though no developer had, at the time, been identified.

The Capital Region is one of three areas in Upstate New York, where voters approved casino gambling licenses.

Other competing proposals include casinos in Bethlehem and Howe Caverns.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway was flatly denied building a full scale casino in its own home of Saratoga Springs, in part because of lack of local control.

The developer said the casino would generate $35.5  million Capital Region wide, boosting tax revenue.

All three competing bidders must hand in their proposals to New York State by June 30, 2014.
