CITRUS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -
A Citrus County man accused of killing his 1-year-old son so he could keep playing a video game made his first appearance in court Friday morning.
Cody Eugene Wygant, 24, of Homosassa, is charged with child neglect with great bodily harm and third-degree murder in connection with the death of his son, Daymeon Wygant.
Citrus County Sheriff's deputies arrested Wygant on Thursday morning.
According to the arrest affidavit, Wygant put his hand over his son's mouth and nose for 3 to 4 minutes to stop him from crying.
Documents also said Wygant admitted to putting the boy in his playpen and wrapping him in bedding "in such a way to prevent the decedent from receiving fresh air", said the affidavit.
Later the child's mother discovered he was purple and not breathing, and called 911.
The reason for the third-degree charge is that Wygant apparently told detectives he did not intend to kill his son.
"From his statement, his intentions were to silence the child. He doesn't say he was trying to kill the child," said Lieutenant Brad Smith with the Sheriff's Office. "But if you're putting your hand over the baby's mouth, and stopping its breathing, then wrapping it tightly with bedding over his head, you would have to think that you're going to kill the child."
Wygant then allegedly watched three episodes of the TV show "Fringe" and played Xbox games for five hours.
A neighbor in the Bella Vista mobile home park said he's disgusted by the case.
"Oh, it's so sad... I mean that poor child," said Scott Bertram. "I can't understand how someone could do something like that to a baby at that. You know, and then, he don't, in my book, that man doesn't belong on the face of the earth. That's how I feel about it."
The judge set Wygant's bond at $50,000 for each charge for a total of $100,000.
Wygant's next court appearance is scheduled for May 23.
