SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A parade was held Thursday for Union College's men's hockey team, in celebration of their national championship win.
The parade began at 4 p.m. in front of Alumni Gym on Alexander Lane and ended at Schenectady City Hall.
Fans and residents lined the parade route and joined the team at city hall in celebration of their 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey championship win.
"How often does this happen? It's never happened before. We hope it happens again," said Schenectady Operations Director Bill Winkler.
Winkler helped oversee the parade preparations. The planning began Monday and in just three days they've pulled everything together. On Thursday morning a banner was hung on city hall, flower pots moved to allow space for a band, and barricades put into position.
The parade featured youth hockey players and bagpipers as well as Union College officials, trustees and the pep band. The players and coaches rode atop four local fire trucks from the city of Schenectady, Niskayuna, Clifton Park and Thomas Corners.
The Franklin/Liberty Parking Lot, Center City Parking Lot and Broadway/ Liberty Parking Lot will have limited access from noon to 8 p.m. Please visit www.ParkSchenectady.com for parking information.
