DEARBORN, Mich. -- Ford will celebrate 50 years of the mustang with the help of one of the most iconic buildings in America.
A brand new 2015 Mustang convertible will be displayed on the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building on April 16 and 17.
Only one other car, also a mustang, has been displayed on the Empire State Building observation deck.
An engineering team worked with two convertible body shells in order to determine how the separate pieces of the car would make it up the elevator to the top of the building. The mustang must be assembled and disassembled all within a matter of days.
A freight elevator and two separate passenger elevators were required to get the car to the top.
The observation deck will close to the public at 2 a.m. April 18, and the crew will reverse the process and remove the car before visitors arrive again at 8 a.m.
