ALBANY, N.Y. - Tuesday is the deadline for gun owners register their assault weapons in New York.
Those who choose not to register could face penalties for violating the SAFE Act.
Even though assault weapons are banned, gun owners who had them prior to the passage of the SAFE Act can keep the ones they own. However, they do need to be registered with State Police.
The SAFE Act has sparked a lot of debate among gun owners, many promising to protest even after Tuesday's deadline.
There hasn't been any official word on what the penalties are for failing to register.
